MD of Lekki gardens, Richard Nyong and 7 others charged to court for Man Slaughter

Richard Nyong, Managing Director & CEO of Lekki Gardens who was in charge of the collapsed five-storey building under construction on Kushenla Road, Ikate Elegushi, Lekki, in March 2016 has been charged with eight others to court.

The charge was filed on February 17, 2017.

In 2016, according to the Lagos State Government, preliminary reports and investigation revealed that the collapsed building had exceeded the approved floors and was served contravention notice after which it was sealed by the Lagos State Building Control Agency.

The government also discovered that the owners of the building, Messrs Lekki Worldwide Estate Limited, unsealed the property and continued building beyond the approved floors until the unfortunate incident which led to the death of over 30 persons.

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode had vowed to put a stop to incidents like that by making sure justice is served.

An extract from the statement released on Monday by Kayode Oyekanmi, an assistant director in the State’s Ministry of Justice read:
“Apart from Lekki Gardens Estate Ltd., HC Insight Solutions Ltd., GT Rich Ltd., others charged along with Richard Nyong are Omotilewa Joseph, Omolabake Mortune, Maruis Agwu, Taiwo Odofin, and Sola Olumofe.
The defendants are facing a six-count charge of failure to obtain approval for the collapsed building as well as manslaughter.
This is contrary to Section 75 of the Urban and Regional Planning and Development, Law of Lagos State, Nigeria.”
