INEC postpones general elections, fixes new dates


The Independent National Electoral Commision, INEC, in a bid to conduct a free, fair and credible election has postponed the general elections slated to hold on February 16th, 2019 to February 23rd, 2019.

In a statement signed by the INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, this was decided after a careful review of the implementation of INEC plan and logistics and need to conduct free and fair elections.

According to INEC Nigeria, the Presidential and National Assembly elections will hold on 23rd February, 2019 while the Governorship, State House of Assembly as well as the FCT Area Council Elections will hold on 9th March, 2019.

He added that this was a difficult decision to take, but necessary for the success of the elections and the consolidation of Nigeria’s democracy.
