Market collapses in Akwa Ibom State

In the early hours of Monday, 19th December 2016, the wall of a privately owned market stall at the popular Urua edere obo, Ikot Akpatek in Onna Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State collapsed.

The Transition Chairman of Onna Local Government Area,  Dr Joshua Ndoho regretted the unfortunate incident and stressed that it was a private structure that collapsed and that he acted properly to evacuate those that were injured to Immanuel Hospital in Eket and to transfer other patients from private hospitals to Immanuel Hospital, Eket for proper monitoring.

He further maintained that as a consequence he was going to do a review of privately owned structures in the market to forestall a reoccurrence.

He thanked the Governor and the state government for the prompt response and thanked God that nobody died.

The Commissioner For Works, Akparawa Ephraim Inyangeyen who visited the scene spoke with the leadership of the market and regretted that some persons tried to make political capital of the incidence by claiming that lives were lost when no one person died.

He sympathised with those injured and wished them speedy recovery.
Eyewitnesses said the wall came down without giving injured persons the opportunity to escape.
One of the witnesses,  Mr Ifreke Udofot said he personally led the rescue effort to save the lives of the persons and thanked the police and the state government for responding promptly and letting the injured persons have the benefit of sound medical attention.
