A 48-year-old long distance runner, Roseann Sdoia, who was present at the Boston Marathon in 2013 got injured when the bomb exploded that day. A 37-year-old firefighter named Mike Materia had rushed over to
help Sdoia just seconds after the explosion and followed her to a hospital to make sure she was fine.
“I asked him if I was going to die and he told me that I was going to be OK, that I only had a flesh wound.” Sdoia said.
In the end, Sdoia’s left leg was amputated, and while she was recovering from the operation, Materia visited her regularly and followed her throughout her healing process.
