Sex worker jailed for trafficking minor.

A sex worker and mother of two, Miracle Ita has been sentenced to two years imprisonment following a Federal High Court ruling in Lagos.

The 27-year-old commercial sex worker is said to have trafficked a 16-year-old girl from Oron Local government area of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria.

According to the court, Miracle is to pay a fine of N250,000.

According to Josiah Emerole, the NAPTIP Head of Press and Public Relations, the 27-year-old Miracle, was arrested on July 15, 2016 by the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) at a Brothel known as Okon Brothel in Ajah, Lagos where the victim was being exploited.

She went further to give a ‘not guilty’ plea to the one count of trafficking in persons preferred against her on February 24, 2016 when she was arraigned in court.

The case with Charge number, FHC/L/57C/2016 commenced on May 12, 2016 after the ‘not guilty’ plea, and the final written addresses of both parties were adopted on December 11, 2017.

Honorable Justice Obiozor, while delivering judgment on Tuesday, found her guilty and sentenced her to 2 years imprisonment with a fine of Two Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira only (N250,000).

The Director-General of NAPTIP, Dame Julie Okah-Donli, applauded and thanked the judiciary as well as the trial judge for joining the agency in fighting against human trafficking and traffickers.

She added that the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons as well as other law enforcement agencies in conjunction with the judiciary will continue to work actively towards making Nigeria void of human traffickers.
