In attendance at the press conference were the Akwa Ibom online community which consists of the bloggers and social media ‘influencers’ as well as some students from the tertiary institutions.
According to the commissioner, the press conference was held in order to know the needs of the citizens and also to make the citizens of the state and the world at large know about the planned, ongoing as well as the completed project of the Governor Udom led administration.
Numerous questions were asked by citizens and each question was attended to by the Commissioner of Information. He talked about the industralization process which is ongoing in the state and answered the question “Why pencil and toothpick factory?”
“Toothpicks which are widely used in homes and hotels in Nigeria is usually imported and that indirectly makes Nigeria to invest in the economy of another country. So, we saw a need to solve that problem.” He said.
“We cannot build a million industries in a day. We have to take it a step at a time and starting with these factories is a step in the right direction.” He continued.
He added that “We have the raw materials and we have to utilize it. Very soon, Nigerians will not have to spend billions importing toothpick but they will be bringing the billions to Akwa Ibom to buy the toothpicks. That way, the money still remains in Nigeria thereby improving our economy.”
Since there was a positive feedback from the citizens who joined the conversation online, the Commissioner said he will make sure the press conference holds quarterly so as to make the citizens to be actively involved and aware of what is going on in the State.
