A Nigerian man named Monday Tony Okonkwo was arrested in India after he was caught with cocaine. Okonkwo was intercepted at the Indhira Gandhi International Airport on the 6th of February by a team of Narcotics Control Bureau operatives during passenger profiling.
According to The Delhi zonal unit of Narcotics Control Bureau, Okonkwo when he was
being questioned, told the team that he visited India for business purposes and never knew anything about the drugs.
“When we conducted a thorough search of his body and baggage, he denied having any drugs or banned substance with him. However, the NCB team got suspicious when he said that he had come to India regarding his business of wigs and hair, but was found travelling on a tourist visa,” said Rajender Pal Singh, deputy director general, NCB.
He was then taken to Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital and the doctors via an x-ray confirmed the presence of the drugs in his stomach after which he finally accepted that he ingested drug capsules from Lagos before taking a flight for Lome to Adis Ababa and then down to Delhi, India. He excreted 90 Capsules containing 1.3 kg cocaine during the 2 days which he spent in the hospital.
According to him, he was meant to deliver the drugs to another Nigerian in New Delhi and was supposed to get in touch after activating a local SIM card. Investigation is ongoing and the government of India are looking for ways to curb the crime.
