Adama Barrow removes “Islamic” from Gambia’s official name

Former Gambian President, Yahya Jammeh had declared his West African country an Islamic republic, at a political rally, on 11 December 2015, making it Africa’s second, after Mauritania but the present Gambian President, Adama Barrow has
said that Gambia will no longer bear the word ‘Islamic’ in it’s official name.

Barrow stated that the country’s population is about 90% muslims and 10% christains as well as animists, therefore ‘islamic’ will no longer be part of the official name.

The previous official name was ” The Islamic Republic Of The Gambia” and the new name will be “The Republic Of The Gambia.”
